Smith & Wesson M&P Shield EZ Pistol Safety Recall

M&P SHIELD® EZ® PISTOL IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR PISTOLS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN MARCH 1ST, 2020 AND OCTOBER 31ST, 2020

Smith & Wesson has identified two M&P Shield EZ Pistols on which the hammers manufactured by our supplier were cracked.  In those firearms, the hammer failed to fully engage the sear, causing the round to fire, cycling the slide, and potentially resulting in multiple discharges without depressing the trigger.  This issue can occur in the following two scenarios:

  1. With a loaded magazine in the firearm and the grip safety depressed, releasing the slide (by pulling it back, or releasing the slide stop), may ignite the round as the slide closes, without engaging the trigger.  The condition may occur, regardless of the manual thumb safety position if equipped.  This may also result in multiple discharges.
     
  2. With a loaded magazine in the firearm, the grip safety depressed, manual safety in the fire position, slide closed, and a round in the chamber, pulling the trigger will cause the round to fire normally, however as the slide cycles, the next round may be ignited as it is chambered by the hammer failing to fully engage the sear, causing multiple discharges.

In all cases, the firearm will NOT fire unless the grip safety is depressed.  While this condition has been found only in two hammers, and our investigation suggests that these two incidents are very isolated, any unintended discharge of a firearm has the potential to cause injury.  Therefore, we have established this Safety Recall as a precautionary measure to ensure that all M&P Shield EZ Pistols in service meet our design specifications. 

Stop using your M&P® Shield™ EZ pistol until you determine whether it is included in this safety recall, and if so, until it has been inspected and repaired by Smith & Wesson, if necessary.

PRODUCT AFFECTED:

This notice applies ONLY to M&P® Shield™ EZ pistols (including Performance Center® models) manufactured between March 1, 2020 and October 31, 2020, and only to a small percentage of that population. It does NOT apply to all SHIELD™ pistols.  To determine whether your M&P Shield EZ Pistol is affected, check the label on the box to determine date of manufacture (see image below), and if manufacture date is between March 1, 2020 and October 31, 2020 – your pistol may be affected. In this case (or if you are unsure of your date of manufacture), simply go to MPShieldEZrecall.com and input your serial number, or call 888-871-7114 .

REMEDY/ACTION TO BE TAKEN:

If your M&P Shield EZ Pistol is included in this recall, we will arrange for the return of your firearm to Smith & Wesson for inspection.  After inspection, if the hammer from your firearm is affected, it will be replaced at no cost to you.  We expect that this entire process will take no longer than 10 business days, and your pistol will be returned as quickly and efficiently as possible.  All shipping and replacement costs will be covered by Smith & Wesson.

If your pistol was manufactured between these dates, please enter the serial number inscribed on your pistol at mpshieldezrecall.com to determine if it is included in this recall.  You may enter multiple serial numbers.  After you have checked all of your serial numbers, you will be asked to complete a pre-paid return label request form. 

Henry H015 Single Shot Rifle & Shotgun Safety Recall and Upgrade

Henry Repeating Arms Company has recently discovered a potential safety issue with H015 Single Shot Rifles and Single Shot Shotguns. Henry is voluntarily initiating a recall to protect the safety of its customers.

To prevent the possibility of death or serious personal injury, you should immediately stop using your H015 model Single Shot Rifle and/or Single Shot Shotgun and not load or fire them until they have been upgraded.

The Issue & Fix:

Under certain conditions, it is possible that some of these rifles and shotguns may discharge without the trigger being pulled if the hammer is partially cocked and released. Henry has identified the cause of the issue, and it will be corrected by replacing various components of the fire control system.

Complimentary Upgrade:

Henry Repeating Arms is also implementing a complimentary and unrelated upgrade for all firearms affected by this safety recall. This upgrade involves a replacement of the trigger guard, hammer, and hammer spring. This design change to improve and reduce the trigger pull has already been incorporated into all H015 rifles and shotguns manufactured in 2020, and will be made to your rifle or shotgun free of charge.

We will upgrade your rifle or shotgun and return it to you free of charge. We will make every effort to complete the upgrade of your rifle or shotgun and return it to you as soon as possible.

To verify that your firearm has been fixed and upgraded, there will be an indentation mark on the inside of the trigger guard behind the trigger as shown below:

ISP Emergency Rules regarding FOID & CCL Expiration

The Illinois State Police have released emergency rules regarding the expiration of FOID cards and Concealed Carry Licenses. The full text can be found below.

FOID Card and CCL expiration dates have been extended until 12 months following the end of the disaster, provided you have submitted your renewal application.

Following the rule change, we will be accepting expired FOID Cards for firearm and ammo purchases.

If you would like to make a purchase and your FOID has expired, you will need:

  • A current Illinois State ID or Drivers License (with your current address).
  • Your expired FOID card.
  • A printout from the Illinois State Police website showing your name, address, and current FOID status.

The printout should look similar to this example:

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE DIRECTOR FILES EMERGENCY RULES REGARDING FOID AND CCL RENEWALS

Springfield, IL – The Illinois State Police filed emergency rules this week to address renewals of Firearm Owner Identification and Concealed Carry Licenses during the COVID-19 epidemic.

These rules are designed to provide FOID card holders and CCL relief from the renewal requirements during the effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

These rule changes are as follows:
  • FOID card holders, who submit their renewal application will remain valid during the duration of the state’s disaster proclamation and for a period of 12 months following the termination of the disaster, even if their renewal application is/was not submitted prior to expiration.
  • CCL licensees, who submit their renewal application, will remain valid during the duration of the state’s disaster proclamation and for a period of 12 months following its termination, even if their CCL renewal application was not submitted prior to expiration.
  • CCL licensees will not be required to immediately submit proof of three-hour training with their CCL renewal application.
  • CCL licensees will need to submit proof of their three-hour renewal training within 12 months following the termination of the state’s disaster proclamation in order to maintain the validity of their CCL license.

ISP will continue to enforce both FOID and CCL prohibitors. FOID card holders who receive revocation notices shall return their FOID and Firearm Disposition Record form to the Illinois State Police. CCL holders who receive revocation notices shall return their CCL license to the Illinois State Police.

These new rules are effective immediately.

News About Expiring Illinois Concealed Carry Permits and Grace Period


We have been getting a lot of calls about people still waiting for their renewal permits for Illinois Concealed Carry. Some applied in January and are still waiting, which are expiring or have recently expired, even though they applied in plenty of time.  I wanted to type this update to everyone and to share what we know on the topic. 

Expired Illinois Concealed Carry License Card


First, I want to clear up something that we have been saying since our first renewal class. We had made the blanket statement in every renewal class to not carry your firearm concealed if you have re-applied and are still waiting for your renewal permit with the current permit expiring before receiving your renewal permit. We were wrong on this point. Corrected Information: Your permit for Illinois Concealed Carry is valid after it expires ONLY if you have already applied for renewal and you are waiting for the renewal permit to be processed by the Illinois State Police. There is a grace period that the State of Illinois gives itself to process the information after the expiration, if you have already applied.

 As most of you should know, I am a Police Officer by trade, and this company is more cautious with what legal information is put out than a lot of other groups. This is because we don’t want our students to become test cases in the courts. It is an expensive process that no one enjoys.  The reason for the blanket statement was because until people started expiring before they received their renewal permits, we didn’t know what the police databases would show while your card was expired yet you were still waiting for your renewal. 


I had the chance to check someone that was in the exact situation. He applied 3 days before his card expired.  His Illinois Concealed Carry Permit of course expired before receiving his renewal permit. What it showed in the police database was that he was still “Active” (valid) with the same expiration date, but it also listed that he had reapplied for the renewal. Because the status still showed Active, he was valid to carry concealed. 


Before everyone jumps for joy over this, remember there could still be some confusion with Police Officers if they don’t know that “Active” translates to valid. Also, the Police Officers in other states may rely on the fact that it has an expired date. Please proceed with caution! I would not rely on your pending renewal Illinois Concealed Carry Permit outside of Illinois. If you have Florida, Utah and or Arizona check to see if they are valid in the states you are going to. We always recommend checking on https://www.handgunlaw.us/


The other information I wanted to share was about the slow down on issuing the renewals for Illinois Concealed Carry. This is speculation on our part but rooted in a solid base. After the shooting in Aurora a few weeks ago, everything slowed to a halt. I believe incident that has caused the large slow down and people waiting for months. When we started the renewals, the Illinois State Police were getting renewals out in just over 30 days. After the shooting, I hadn’t heard of anyone getting their renewal permits at all. That is what started the emails and phone calls because everyone is hitting the 2 month (or longer) wait period and the expiration dates are coming up.

 I heard from a former student at the Gat Guns Factory Shoot that that the day before (Friday) his status had changed from “Under Review” to “Active” on the Illinois State Police Website. That change usually happens when they are dropping your card in the mail. We are past the week that it takes to get the card in the mail, but I haven’t heard back from the former student to find out if he got his card yet.

  If you expire before you re-apply for your renewal, the Illinois State Police will make you take the entire 16-hour class again.  Some people are getting letters and others are not. If you have moved in the last 5 years and have not changed your address with the Illinois State Police, you will not be getting a letter. It doesn’t matter if you have changed your Illinois Driver’s License to your new address. The systems operate separately.

Firearm Waiting Period

Starting January 1st, 2019, a new state law will take effect requiring a 72 hour waiting period before picking up any handgun or long gun.

FOID Card Applications Unavailable

The Illinois State Police have scheduled maintenance on their systems for December 31st and January 1st. We will be unable to process any FOID Card Applications during this time.

9MM Ruger American Safety Bulletin

Ruger has found that on certain 9mm American pistols, premature wear can cause a crack to develop near the ejection port of the slide. While this doesn’t generally occur below round counts near 10,000, it is easily inspected for and the retrofit to repair the problem is free and simple. It is also of note that the crack will be clear and visible long before the firearm becomes unsafe to shoot.

These issues are only present on certain Ruger American pistols in 9mm that have a silver barrel. Any models with a black nitride barrel, or guns in calibers other than 9mm, shouldn’t have any need to inspect.

Three spots on the firearm can be inspected for excess wear. The first is the top of the barrel hood where the barrel meets the slide. The second area is on the slide, likewise where the barrel and slide meet. In each of these areas, some wear is expected, but evidence of heavy wear or repeated impacts between parts are indicative of the issue. The third location is on the slide on the right side at the back of the ejection port. In this area, look for any signs of cracking. If any of these are evident, the gun should be sent in.

Kel-Tec Sub-2000 Safety Recall Notice

Kel-Tec has found that a number of Sub-2000’s manufactured in 2017 had received faulty heat treatment on the steel tubes used for the barrel, and run a risk of rupturing during fire.

To identify if your firearm is affected, please check the serial number on Kel-Tec’s website at https://recalls.keltecweapons.com/.

If you are a customer who is affected by the recall, stop using the firearm immediately and follow the instructions on the website.

Smith & Wesson M&P380 Shield EZ Consumer Advisory

Smith & Wesson has found that the version of this pistol with the manual thumb safety can have that safety unintentionally engaged by shooting recoil. This occurs with ammunition that produces a high felt recoil, and will not allow the next round to be fired until the safety is manually disengaged.

Smith & Wesson has already improved the design of the pistol so that recently manufactured firearms will not have this issue.
