GAT GUNS has a class designed for young shooters, ages 8 through 14

If you want your child to learn firearms responsibility, safety, and proper shooting technique, this is a great group class for a nominal fee. The class is taught by NRA certified instructors. These classes will be held on varying Thursdays, each month from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The class is limited to 11 students. Classes must have 5 students registered five days prior to the class date or the class will be cancelled and students can be transferred to another date. See the Training Calendar for dates. Each child must be supervised by a parent at all times. FOID cards are not required.

The class is 2 hours long consisting of 1 hour in the classroom and up to 1 hour on the range. The content of each class is:

Promotion and demonstration on the safe handling of guns on the range
Proper grip, sight picture, stance, breathing, and trigger control
Live fire at paper targets with a Ruger SR-22 .22 caliber handgun
How to deal with guns in the home

The cost of the class covers both child and parent and includes:

Each child will receive a wallet size card indicating that they have taken this training at GAT GUNS. With this card, when accompanied by a parent with a valid FOID card, they will be able to shoot in our range from age 8. Without the card, the minimum age for the range is 14. When coming in to shoot, children can only shoot the parent’s guns – they cannot shoot a rental gun.

Children aged 8-13 who have passed this course are invited to use our pistol range at the discounted rate of $12.95 per hour. They must present their Youth Handgun Safety card and be accompanied by a paying parent.

Each student will receive a decorative named certificate of completion for the course.

To pass the course, students must show an acceptable level of safety and proficiency as determined by the instructor.

Wayne, Thank you for the wonderful firearm youth safety course you gave us this month. Ian had a great time and he learned a lot from you. You brought exactly the right balance of seriousness and fun. The course really focused on the key elements necessary for youth safety. You also explained the firearm very well..simply and effectively. In addition your approach to the range and safety was very well thought out.

I wanted to let you know that my son and I really enjoyed the youth gun safety class last night. I was impressed with the instructor’s (Wayne) approach to teaching young beginners about guns and their safe use. He made the students feel comfortable while making the adults feel that everything was being done in safest, most responsible way.

My son and I are both new to guns use we learned a lot and it was a great way for us to bond. I’ll definitely be recommending this course at Gat Guns to others. – Tony
